CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
Welcome to the First and Second Grade classroom!
This year your child will come home with a planner each night. It is marked with their behavior chart information for the day and will have homework assignments listed. Please check and sign it each night. Later we will have spelling word lists in the planner as well.
In my classroom the behavior chart colors follow the colors of the rainbow.
Purple – Outstanding
Blue – Excellent
Green – Ready to Work
Yellow – Warning
Orange – Think About It
Red – Parent Contact
The students start each day at green. They must do something extra special to move up the chart. Students will get one warning if they show improper behavior. If your child gets moved to orange some recess time will be spent thinking about the correct behavior. Students are expected to be respectful to all adults and students. I expect work to be completed on time and directions are to be followed.
Students will have a flash card bag in his or her book bag. There will be a bag with reading words and a bag with math facts. Please practice these flash cards each night until your child knows them “in a flash”.
Your child also will have a folder to bring home each night. It is marked “To be left at home” and “Bring right back”. They will have homework to do each night Monday through Thursday. Most times it will be a book or short story that they should read or a sheet to be completed. Please sit with your child and listen to them read the book. Feel free to ask them questions about the story as they read.
Your child should be reading about 15 minutes each night. They will have the opportunity to take Accelerated Reader (AR) tests at school. These are short comprehension tests online. I will set a goal for your child to meet each quarter. Students who meet the goal will get a prize.
We will have reading and math in the mornings and religion, handwriting, social studies, and science in the afternoons. If you need to make appointments with your child it is better to be absent in the afternoon.
Students may bring a snack to be eaten at 10:00 or buy the school’s breakfast. It has a cost of $1.50 this year. Please let the office know if you want your child to buy breakfast from school.
Please feel free to contact me by email, text, or phone call with any questions or concerns.
